The City of Columbia is seeking a dynamic innovative individual committed to the fire service profession. Columbia, home to the University of Missouri, has a population of over 124,500 and is strategically located on Interstate 70 halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City. Columbia is consistently listed among the top US Cities by national magazines and organizations for its well-educated workforce, positive economic development climate, low cost of living and overall superior quality of life. These positive attributes have resulted in Columbia’s steady population growth of 2.35 percent per year over the last ten years.
Columbia operates under the council/manager form of government. The City Council consists of a Mayor elected at-large and 6 members elected from wards. The Council appoints a City Manager who is responsible for administering and coordinating municipal operations and programs. The Fire Chief, who reports to the City Manager leads a Department consisting of 145 employees: 130 in emergency services, 7 in administration, 2 in department services and 6 in the fire marshal’s office. The department manages a $19 million budget. The Columbia Fire Department received international accreditation through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) in March of 2019.
The minimum job requirements are a Bachelor’s Degree in fire service management, public administration, accounting, or a related field and a minimum of 10 years management level experience in the fire service supplemented by substantive training/education in management/administration, or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Must be a collaborative team-player. Must be technically current in fire suppression and first responder methods, practices, and techniques.
