Ideally situated in the heart of East Texas, just two hours east of Dallas and 45 minutes west of Shreveport, Marshall is part of the tri-state region — a socio-economic area comprised of 39 counties and parishes in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. With a population of 23,641, it serves as the county seat for Harrison County.

Marshall is a home-rule city operating under a council-manager form of government. The City Council is comprised of seven members, including the Mayor.

The Marshall Fire Department provides fire suppression and emergency medical response to the citizens of Marshall and provides emergency medical response to much of Harrison County. Fire suppression response is also provided to Harrison County citizens through an inter-local agreement and mutual aid agreements. The Fire Department has 50 total firefighters (and one secretary) when fully staffed. This is made up of five front office personnel, including the Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief/Training officer, an EMS supervisor, the Fire Marshal, and an Assistant Fire Marshal/Inspector. Suppression has 45 total firefighter/medics spread among three shifts.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in fire science, public administration, business administration, emergency management, or a closely related field, with a master’s degree preferred. A minimum of seven (7) years of firefighting field experience, including five (5) years in a senior management or command-level position with a municipal fire department, is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Residency is required within 90 days of hire.

The candidate should have a diverse background in experience from an operational and management point of view. The Fire Chief will have occasional exposure to physical hazards when responding to fire, EMS, hazardous material incidents, or riding with firefighters/EMTs.

Candidates must have the following certifications:
• Intermediate Firefighter from Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP)
• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
• Fire Instructor II
• TEEX Fire Chief Executive Fire Officer (FSCEO) Designation, Texas Fire Chief Academy Certified Fire Executive (CFE) or the National Fire Academy (EFO).
• NIMS certification as ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800
• Valid Class C Texas driver’s license with acceptable driving record

Preferred certifications include:
• Paramedic and EMS Instructor from DSHS
• Texas Local Government Code 143 experience is a plus
• TCFP Master Firefighter
• Fire Officer IV
• Incident Safety Officer
• Fire Inspector
• Fire Investigator
• Eligibility for certification as Head of Department
• Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) or National Registry Paramedic Certification.
• Fire-based EMS Experience is a Plus

Successful completion of a physical examination and/or drug screening analysis will be required, as well as adherence to the City’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Policy.

The City of Marshall is offering a competitive salary range of $100,443-$149,566 depending on qualifications and experience.
