Today, the first Monday of October, is recognized as World Habitat Day. It is easy to sometimes take the roofs over our heads for granted. Today is an opportunity to reflect on the state of housing in our cities, towns, and even neighborhoods. Everyone has a right to shelter, and thinking of ways to improve housing in our communities can not only make us more aware of the world in which we live, but can also put ideas into action that can help others.

Here are some facts provided by Habitat for Humanity about World Habitat Day, and more can be found on their website:

  • On World Habitat Day, Habitat for Humanity joins the United Nations and organizations around the world in raising awareness, educating and mobilizing individuals and communities to take action on the current global housing crisis.
  • Housing is central to ending the cycle of poverty. We want to see a world where everyone has a decent place to live, and so, on World Habitat Day, we call for programs, policies and systems that would make that world possible.

Take a moment today and think about your community - what could be improved? Are there programs for equal opportunity housing? How can we make a difference?

Happy World Habitat Day!
