SENIOR ACCOUNTANT - PAYROLL
Town of Dumfries, VA
The purpose of this position is to maintain and prepare complex financial records. Performs complex, technical work involving the preparation and maintenance of bi-weekly and monthly payroll activities.
Troubleshoots payroll problems and makes recommends procedural changes as necessary. The Senior Accountant works under limited supervision and reports major activities through periodic meetings. Supervision is exercised over subordinate accounting personnel. Reports to Chief Financial Officer.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Prepares the bi-weekly and monthly payroll transactions. Communicates and works in concert with HR and other business units to ensure timely and accurate processing of employee payroll.
• Prepares a variety of financial statements and reports for the Town.
• Assists other departments regarding financial matters and transfers funds as required.
• Assists internal and external auditors and prepares required reports.
• Reviews current accounting procedures and recommends needed improvements.
• Researches and provides financial data on request.
• Enters approved program budgets and modifications into accounting systems; develops and maintains tracking system for milestones, technical, financial, and other reporting, oversees renewals and extensions.
• Assists with preparation of the department's budget.
• Maintains ledgers, reports and other financial documentation, reviews for technical
defects and errors including, but not limited to, quarterly financial reports and payroll reports.
• Verifies and reconciles financial data to assure accuracy and completeness of information.
• Participates in monitoring and evaluating the adequacy of internal accounting controls, records, and procedures.
• Assists in maintaining financial records, reporting, and budgeting.
• Performs other assigned duties
