About the 2016 Assistants' Exchange

The Assistants’ Exchange gives participants an opportunity to meet other local government professionals and learn how other communities deliver services, engage citizens and strategically plan for the future.

The Exchange will involve spending the day as the guest of a participating local government in the Kansas City Metro area. On Friday morning, participants will be transported from their hotels to their host communities where they will tour government operations, attend meetings, and discuss the programs, people, and issues affecting the community. The urban region encompasses several communities that have already enthusiastically agreed to serve as hosts.

After the tour, interested members of the group will meet for a reception with their hosts at a venue near the convention center.

Plan to Come Early!

Because the exchange program begins early Friday morning, participants should plan to arrive in Kansas City on Thursday, September 22nd. Participants will be responsible for their own expenses, except for transportation to and from their host communities and lunch on Friday.

Apply Today - Spaces are Limited!

The exchange program is open to all assistants who are ICMA members. The number of assistants that the program can accommodate will be limited to the number of host communities participating. Selections will be made on a first come, first-served basis. Apply early!

We encourage assistants to take advantage of this valuable opportunity for yourself or encourage a team member in your town, city, or county to participate.  To apply, please download the registration form and send the completed form via email to:

What to Expect in Your Transition to “The Big Chair” That Nobody Told You About

Monday, September 26 ¦ 4:00-5:15 PM

Thinking about moving up to the Manager job? Hear from professionals that recently became managers (within the last year).  Come to hear about their transition, learn what problems/challenges they encountered and what pleasant surprises they found. Receive tips and advice on how to prepare and what to expect during your transition from #2 to #1.

What's new: Managers tell you what it is like to be a manager. If you have a mentor, they will even help you prepare for the position, but there are aspects of your transition from #2 to #1 that your Manager may not be able to prepare you for. You may likely be working for a different governing body, for a different form of government, for a different size city; your management style may be different, or you may come from a different generation than the current Manager.

Moderator: Cesar Correa

Panelists (table leaders): Marcia Hampton, Kris Simpson, Melissa Stevenson Diaz,  and Bonnie Svrcek
