Human Resources Director
The City of Aspen is looking for an individual with managerial and governmental Human Resources experience to lead and direct our City’s Human Resources Department.

Salary Range: $112,569 - $158,163

The City of Aspen Human Resources Department is the centralized function that focuses on its people – the City’s greatest resource – while overseeing compensation, classification and total benefit management, talent acquisition, policies and procedures, department budget management, HRIS, workforce planning, risk and safety management, employee relations, performance management , training and development, and assists with organization development and culture .
The Human Resources Director manages and provides oversight to the City’s Human Resources department while continuing to be a strategic resource and partner for the City’s internal stakeholders. This individual will be responsible for developing strategies and policies consistent with the City’s mission and value statements. The Director is responsible for recommending and instituting strategies and goals that further the attainment of the City’s strategic goals.
By executing leadership through sound judgement and accountability, the Human Resources Director fosters a culture of diversity, equity, collaboration, and inclusion. The Human Resources Director advises, confers, and counsels employees, supervisors and managers, in the handling of conflict resolution and consensus building.
A steady goal of the Director is that of a strategic business partner to enhance the overall performance of the departments and organization. Priority goals for the Director include:
- Assisting in the compensation and classification study currently underway.
- Initiating a Financial Advisor Request for Proposal (RFP).
- Providing assistance in the Benefits Consultant Request for Proposal (RFP).
- Updating the policy manual and insuring organizational mission and vision alignment.
- Continuing to meet current and future workforce demands.
- Instituting key HR metrics.
- Evaluating employee engagement initiatives and action plan strategies.

Education: Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in Human Resources, Public Administration, Management, or relevant field of study.
Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible, management focused experience in human resources with three (3) in supervisory or management position and experience in compensation and benefits, safety and risk, information systems, recruitment and selection, organizational development, public relations, or other HR generalist services.
Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date. ICS 100 and 200 required to be completed within six (6) months from date of hire.
NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
- Master’s in Human Resources, Business Administration, or other relevant degree
- Seven (7) or more years of professional governmental Human Resources Management.
- Prefer SPHR, SHRM-SCP or CBP and government human resource experience. Prefer demonstrated experience leveraging technology to improve processes.
NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.
