ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Commerce City is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to serve as Deputy City Manager – Strategic Initiatives, who will work in partnership with our recently filled Deputy City Manager – City Operations to support the City Manager’s organizational philosophy of innovation and execution of essential municipal services. These critical leadership roles will work together to oversee Strategic Initiatives and City Operations, ensuring the city’s continued success in fostering a thriving, innovative, and supported community. Working closely with the City Manager, City Council, and department leaders, this individual, in partnership with the Deputy City Manager – City Operations, will help shape the future of Commerce City through strategic leadership, operational excellence, and commitment to community engagement.
The Deputy City Manager for Strategic Initiatives will be responsible for advancing the city’s long-term vision by leading citywide initiatives, innovation, and policy development. This role requires a forward-thinking leader who can identify emerging trends, drive strategic planning efforts, and build cross-sector partnerships that position Commerce City for sustainable growth and success. The ideal candidate will leverage their years of experience and intuition as an influential strategist capable of aligning city priorities with community needs and fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The responsibilities for the Deputy City Manager – Strategic Initiatives include:
• Lead strategic planning efforts and citywide initiatives.
• Support the development and strengthening of intergovernmental affairs with partners across the public and private sectors.
• Foster collaboration and innovation across departments.
• Develop performance measurement frameworks for city initiatives.
In partnership with the Deputy City Manager – City Operations, this role will serve as the thinking and strategic engine of the city while working with department leaders and the executive leadership team to set them up for thoughtful and data-informed action and execution. In addition, this role also collaborates to support critical municipal delivery, budget management and fiscal accountability, and public safety coordination and infrastructure planning. The ideal candidate for this position will possess a deep understanding of strategic planning and operational management, as they may be asked to support the responsibilities of the Deputy City Manager – City Operations and the City Manager in their absence.

QUALIFICATIONS
• A bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
• A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in local government, with at least five (5) years in a leadership or executive role.
• Proven ability to lead large-scale initiatives and collaborate effectively on complex municipal operations.
• Extensive knowledge of budgeting, financial management, and performance measurement.
• Experience working in a fast-growing, diverse community with evolving needs.
COMPENSATION
The anticipated hiring range for this Deputy City Manager position is $193,000 - $258,148 annually. Commerce City offers an extensive benefits package, including an 8% 401A match and up to a 3% deferred compensation match, in addition to comprehensive healthcare and professional development.
