Cornelius, NC - The Town of Cornelius has implemented a False Alarm Reduction program to encourage alarm users and alarm companies to help solve the problem of chronic false alarms.
Studies show that approximately 98% of burglar alarms nationwide are false alarms. Unnecessary calls for service due to false alarms cause significant problems and place a heavy burden on law enforcement officers. In response to the problem, the Town of Cornelius has passed Ordinance Chapter 99: Alarm Systems, which has been designed to reduce false alarms.
Cornelius residents and businesses are now required to register their monitored or unmonitored alarm system. Cornelius has partnered with the Public Safety Corporation/CryWolf to assist with the implementation and enforcement of the False Alarm Ordinance. Monitored alarm users will be contacted with more details and registration information. Unmonitored users can register online. Online registration is available at www.crywolf.us/oss/corneliusnc/
The initial registration fee is $10.00 with a renewal fee of $10.00 each year thereafter. An alarm permit is valid for twelve months from the date issued. The fees are waived for residents who are 65 years of age or older. The initial registration period began on March 1, 2013 and residents and businesses will have 90 days to register. Fines for false alarms will be assessed beginning June 1, 2013, on a tiered system.
