ICMA offers many ways for encore and retired local government managers to stay connected to the profession, each other, and the next generation of professionals who depend on their insights and experience. These ways include: serving as a mentor, domestic and international volunteer opportunities, staying up to date on emerging local government management issues, support for transitioning between management and encore careers, and opportunities to network with friends and colleagues

A whole generation of managers has or soon will retire from local government management. ICMA endeavors to support members at all stages in their careers and lives. Therefore, ICMA has developed a new set of resources to support members who are thinking of transitioning from full-time local government careers into their next life phase.

ICMA strives to keep members engaged even into retirement. There are two types of membership for those who are retired from the profession.
