In May 2007, a tornado hit the town of Greensburg, Kansas, severely damaging or destroying 90 percent of the structures in town. Through intensive community engagement, the city has created a Long-Term Community Recovery Plan. The plan is centered around the community’s vision: “keep the things that have made Greensburg and Kiowa County a good place to live, work, and own a business, and then suggest ways to build upon strengths of the community to make it prosperous, appealing, livable, and sustainable.” The action oriented plan outlines 40 projects designed to build the foundation for recovery.
