“Sustainability is the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

In May 2009, the city of Peoria held its first "Green Your Ride" alternative-fuel vehicle show. The event commemorated Public Works Week by demonstrating, in cooperation with private-sector partners, how Peoria fosters sustainability in its operations and how individuals can do so in their daily lives. By demonstrating Peoria’s sustainable practices and showing members of the public what they can do at home, “Green Your Ride” helped foster a sustainability partnership between the city and its residents.

This case study was submitted to the Alliance for Innovation for consideration at the 2010 Transforming Local Government conference.
