This article examines the response by the city of San Leandro, California to a potentially hazardous landslide triggered by El Nino’s heavy rains. Outlines steps taken by the city to protect lives, private homes, and city infrastructure when a large hillside began to slide downward--from evacuating homes threatened by the landslide, monitoring the status of the situation, to contracting to have the threatened homes moved temporarily.
