When drivers answering 911 calls found it difficult to locate houses on long, unnamed driveways with several houses, Davie County, North Carolina (34,800), began requiring that every road have an official name. Now, when a new house is built on an unnamed, privately owned stretch of road, the owners of the house receive a form from the county asking them to list their top three choices of names for the road. Homeowners must obtain signatures from all others living on the road (often family members). The county then selects one of the three choices after ensuring that it is not offensive and does not duplicate an existing road name. Initially, many residents selected amusing names, such as Getta Way, Outatha Way, and Staya Way, but the county discouraged this practice as these names were confusing to 911 drivers. The county also discourages the use of first names, such as “Tom’s Way,” because these road signs are often stolen.
