2018 Conference Keynote Spotlight: Doris Kearns GoodwinAlso drawing on her new book Leadership in Turbulent Times, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin returns to ICMA’s keynote stage Monday, September 24, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., to examine the unique journeys of four presidents—Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson—as they developed into leaders.

2018 Conference Keynote Spotlight: Greg BellTuesday morning (September 25, 9:00 to 10 a.m.) keynoter Greg Bell believes there is one leadership characteristic that influences and strengthens all others: courage. Through powerful stories based on his book, Water the Bamboo: Unleashing the Potential of Teams and Individuals, Greg will show us how to unleash our own tenacity and cultivate the bravery and leadership potential of those around us.

2018 Conference Keynote Spotlight: Wes MooreBaltimore native Wes Moore has been busy since his first visit to the ICMA in 2011. In 2014, he founded Baltimore’s BridgeEdU, which focuses on students from marginalized populations, and he was named chief executive officer of Robin Hood, New York City’s largest poverty-focused foundation. In his energizing, conference-closing presentation at the Celebration of Service on Wednesday, September 26, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Wes will inspire us to see solutions instead of problems and to evolve, adopt, and inspire others.

Member Feedback Requested on Tenets 1 and 2The formal review of the ICMA Code of Ethics, launched in 2013, continues this year with a focus on Tenets 1 and 2. ICMA members are invited to provide feedback on whether Tenets 1 and 2 of the ICMA Code of Ethics are still relevant as written. Your feedback will assist the ICMA Committee on Professional Conduct determine whether revisions to these two tenets and the guideline are needed.

4 Things to Consider When Trying for Your First Local Government Job. This blog post provides resources to those trying to break into the local government profession. These resources include tips for interviews and resume writing as well as what to do once you have been offered your first position in the profession.  

Podcast: Jane Brautigam. To celebrate Public Service Recognition Week in May, ICMA launched a new series of its Local Gov Life Podcast called "Making a Difference." In the first episode, we spoke to Jane Brautigam who has been city manager of Boulder, Colorado, since 2008, and is the first woman manager in the city's 90-plus-year history. Brautigam started out in the legal profession and then engaged with local government to eventually become manager of one of the most beloved and recognizable cities in the United States. In this episode of “Making a Difference," (powered by Capella University), Brautigam discusses how she "fell in love" with local government, plus the challenges of diversifying a community and creating more affordable housing.
