These four words certainly describe local government resiliency, the subject of PM’s April cover story, “Can Resiliency Be Learned?” I’ve been reading news stories and meteorological forecasts recently that predict that even larger storm systems will hit parts of the United States this year, along with possible wildfire threats and lots of precipitation for other parts of the country. I’m optimistic that “Anticipate” and “Withstand” are already being addressed by communities with their all-hazard community risk assessments. Plus, author Tom Wieczorek writes that “Recover” and “Evolve” will definitely be easier for those that plan ahead.
Even though all the April articles give readers food for thought, I want to call out two that I think managers will appreciate. In response to the On Point question “Has there ever been a time when you freaked out everyone in the room?,” four managers give honest answers about familiar situations—revenue deficits, street closing, requested job resignation, and audience awareness.
The second article also has to do with being prepared. Even though a manager might plan on overseeing a project or even a routine task, unexpected circumstances can occur and someone else has to step in. A management lesson on how to ready assistants for unexpected challenges looks to a ship for the story.
Anticipate. Withstand. Recover. Evolve. Words to live—and work—by.
