It is certainly lonely at the top as CEO of an public organization. The decisions rest with the CEO. Very few, if any, opportunities for private trial and error with a staff that rarely want to challenge the manager. This situation can lead to some unethical decision making. The two scenarios described in the article show just that. To assist managers in their ethics decision-making process, the article cites Bill George's book True North which recommends creating a personal board of directors. The board -- consisting of family, friends, and peers -- serves as the sounding board for running idea passed yet will be candid, challenge when necessary, and provide all around support.
