Solar power has been recognized as an effective means of reducing environmental impact and supporting energy independences.  It also can have positive economic benefits resulting from long-term energy savings.  The nation's major professional sports leagues have recognized the many benefits solar power and have begun installing solar capacity on stadiums across the country. Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, and Major League Soccer are all urging their teams, arenas, and stadiums to adopt solar power in their stadiums and arenas in order to minimize their carbon footprints. This guide, developed by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) and distributed to sports leagues, outlines the work necessary for stadiums and arenas to add on-site solar power generation.

The guide is a resource for the owners and operators of sports facilities across the country and provides an overview of the advantages and challenges of installing solar capacity; the process of undertaking a project; ideas for system location; cost estimates; and information on financial incentives.
