The City of Shawnee faced a rise in violent crime while simultaneously dealing with tough economic conditions. To police more efficiently and effectively, the city implemented the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’ (NHTSA) policing operational model called Data Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety (DDACTS). After collecting historical crime and crash data, an area within Shawnee along a main thoroughfare was identified as ideal for the implementation of this sort of approach. The area (named 75th Street Corridor for identification purposes) represented an overall disproportionate volume of stranger crime (crimes where there is no known relationship between the victim and perpetrator) and crashes based on size and population. This case demonstrates the City of Shawnee’s innovative approach to implementing DDACTS.
