Since 1995, the City of Sandy City, Utah has been engaged in the Healthy Sandy Partnership, which brings together a coalition of organizations and concerned citizens to help combat the problems of rising childhood and adult obesity rates, ballooning healthcare costs, and declining life expectancy vis-à-vis other countries. An all-volunteer organization, Healthy Sandy drew its leadership from the local government, Alta View Hospital, the Salt Lake Valley Health Department, the Canyons School District, the Sandy Senior Center, and several local businesses and ecclesiastical leaders. Participants were divided into sub-committees to carry out their efforts, and met bi-monthly to coordinate projects and programs. As time progressed, Healthy Sandy grew to appreciate a broad group’s ability to help to achieve difficult public health goals which frequently involved multiple parties and competing jurisdictional authority.
