In the last fifteen years, the City of Cedar Park, Texas, underwent a population explosion of epic proportions, growing by an incredible 265 percent!  This bustling Austin suburb became home to a tremendous number of new families and a growing population of adolescents. A considerable need arose to provide these teens with after-school activities. Although the community and schools offered the opportunity for teen students to participate in sports or band, there were limited opportunities for students to engage with their community and serve the public. The Teen Advocates for Community Safety (TACS) program was implemented to provide just such activities while concurrently encouraging diversity within traditionally more homogeneous professions such as public safety. An innovative and cost-efficient year-round program, TACS has helped local government in meeting its obligations to the community by providing community education opportunities, develop leadership skills, and helping teens explore career possibilities in fire service, emergency management, police service, public administration, and medical fields.
