Individuals with disabilities can borrow one of two motorized scooters at no charge when they visit downtown Traverse City, Michigan (14,500), during the summer months. Each four-wheel electric scooter has a basket in front and must be recharged every few hours. Potential users must present proof—such as a state car sticker—of a physical disability, be 18 years or older or accompanied by an adult, and not have consumed alcohol within the past two hours. After filling out a form listing the rules that must be followed, they may borrow a scooter for up to four hours for use within the downtown area. The scooters were donated by a local business in response to a suggestion from a city commissioner, and the city pays for their upkeep. The scooters have been publicized through a press conference, posters, and newsletters.
