This article highlights a community-based response to a fatal, alcohol-related traffic accident that killed an area teen in Los Gatos, California. The police chief, high school principal, and other community leaders created an initiative to change the culture of high-risk behavior among teens. Program outcomes include a new philosophy on police response to youth-related issues, a new city youth commission, and social and educational events for teens. For its efforts, Los Gatos received a 2004 Helen Putnam Award for Excellence. Reprinted with permission from Western City, the monthly magazine of the League of California Cities. Copyright 2004.
