This report investigated the impacts of large wildfires and associated spending on the economies located near them. The population for the study was 346 wildfires that occurred between 2004 and 2008 and cost more than $1 million each in Forest Service suppression costs. The researchers found that how the Forest Service spends suppression money greatly influences how a community experiences a fire.
