In 2004 the City of San Antonio toted an alarmingly high number of animals euthanized, 90%. This was problematic for the city as well as the residents. The Animal Care Services program was the answer; through this program the number of animals euthanized had drastically decreased to 10% by 2015. This decline in euthanization was a direct result of a three step plan based on feedback from City Council, citizens, etc. The program has been nominated for the 2016 Local Government Excellence Awards in the category of Community Partnership (populations of 50,000 and greater).
