There is no shortage of technologies available to help us better connect with one another. Daily, we hear about new apps, websites, and innovative devices. It’s daunting to sort through the noise and determine which technologies make the most sense in a local government/sustainability context, but here are a couple that are worth checking out:

  1. Mindmixer. This two-way communication platform creates a place to have an online discussion with the community. While there are other platforms with this same functionality, what’s unique about Mindmixer is that it’s so darn easy to use, is visually appealing, and people seem to actually participate. One community encouraged participation by pledging to fund a citizen-recommended idea.
  2. UC Davis Sustainability Map. The good folks at UC Davis took a Google Map and added layers for all sorts of things that would please any sustainability enthusiast. The genius of this map is that it’s easy to use, and quickly allows people to find the information they seek – all from one location. New to town and looking for bike parking? Check the map. Need to find the nearest bus stop? Check the map. Chances are, this information is already available within your organization, it’s just a matter of making it public and putting it all in one place.
