Plugging PM as a top-notch information resource only comes naturally for me. But I’ve always been intrigued with the meaningful—and sensible—information that ICMA’s surveys uncover, so it’s only right to consider them resources too. The March PM cover story features ICMA’s State of the Profession survey; it is just one of several ICMA surveys completed and analyzed during 2012–2013.

After studying responses to the survey’s question on public participation, the authors developed a list of six questions that can help local government managers get residents involved in face-to-face meetings and online participation methods. If the questions aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, perhaps the article’s Rancho Cordova, California, case study that begins with chickens (honest!) will raise your curiosity.

A few more resources in the March issue: “Coping with Nasty” (I like the title!) has a list of coping behaviors for working with elected officials who might on occasion act like bullies. “The Path to Academia” tells how to gain a foothold into adjunct teaching, with a list of online resources. In “Web Resources,” check out the new web portal at www.restreets.org that focuses on the planning, design, and construction of streets for livability purposes..

PM stories are informative and interesting, and as far as resources are concerned, I hope you always check PM for them.
