As a part of this year’s Police Week, we at In the Know would like to express our gratitude to those that serve us and keep us safe. From the heroes of tragedies such as recent events in Boston, to the everyday heroes we may not hear about on the news, we’d just like to say: thank you.

Among this year’s Police Week Events are several listed below:

This past Saturday, over 1,500 people participated in the National Police Week 5K, which (as you can see on the website’s course map) started and ended on the 600 block of G St NW in Washington, DC. It took them down 3rd street all the way to C St SW; back up into northwest and a few blocks up and then back down Constitution, then back to the start line. The event’s Facebook page features pictures and stories from the 5K, and this Google doc features results from the race.

On Sunday May 12, motorcyclists rode together for the 18th annual LawRide started at RFK stadium and went to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial at Judiciary Square for the beginning events of the week. Iron Warriors MC in Omaha, Nebraska hosts a similar event; their 5th annual LawRide was this past Saturday.

The 25th annual Police Week Candlelight Vigil honored officers who fell in the line of duty, as well as the first responders at the Boston Marathon Bombings. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder, among others, spoke at the event. This column on Officer.com by Lt. Frank Borelli (ret.) details his experiences so far at Police Week, with a focus on the Vigil.

The 11th Annual Honor Guard Competition featured Honor Guards from around the country, all of whom had to perform the Team Inspection, The Posting of the Colors, and the Exhibition Phase yesterday on Capitol Hill. The Wall Street Journal, in its photos of the day, included a picture of U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Shane Clark judging members of the Washington state police.

Today is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and various ceremonies will take place in DC and around the country, and the official ceremonies take place at 11am at the West Front of the Capitol.

Tomorrow, the last day of Police Week, there will be three events, including the National Police Challenge 50-Kilometer Relay.
