As we culminate the week of thanksgiving, Oliver Sellers-Garcia, the Coordinator of Sustainability and the Environment of Somerville, MA and I prepare to travel to La Ceiba, Honduras. The Climate Change adaptation challenge for this city focuses in sanitation and coastal protection. We’ll be looking to promote Climate Change adaptation strategies as a component of the city’s planning and operations in the face of flood risks and the lack of adequate drainage. Climate Change adaptation measures for coastal protection and restoration will also be considered.  The team will be mindful of the city’s need to strengthen the technical knowledge of local government decision makers and to identify steps to take based on a number of proposed solutions assessed by previous aid organizations.

Our team welcomes UCCRN member Professor Erika Tenorio, a water resources expert from Zamora University who will be with us all week. Carlos Castillo from the USAID Honduras Mission will also be joining us all day Monday while we meet with the Mayor of La Ceiba and other city officials. It will be a day packed of preliminary meetings to help us gain a wider scope of the work that we will be doing throughout this exchange.
