The Young Professionals Leadership Institute provides assistants, assistant managers, and those who are beginning their career path in local government an engaging, interactive professional development opportunity in five locations around the country.

Two Workshops, a Session on Creating a Bright Financial Future, and Five Regional Locations

Designed for emerging leaders who may have MPA degrees but who may not be ICMA members or who may be working in the organization in their first job but are not in the manager’s position, the Young Professionals Leadership Institute, (YPLI) is a two-day intensive program that will expose early-career professionals to leadership-skill-based topics that may otherwise take years to grasp and master. Participants will walk away with knowledge and insights that will contribute to their personal and professional growth throughout their career.

Each year, the topics chosen focus on key concepts essential for building leadership skills set through the art and practice of leadership and peer-to-peer interaction with two new workshop offerings:

On Wednesday, the YPLI will focus on application tools to help individuals implement the ideas presented in Jim Collins’ book Great by Choice with an ICMA University Workshop “Living Great by Choice” led by Felicia Logan, ICMA director of leadership development. Participants will work to identify practical applications of the core concepts from the Great by Choice book and engage in a series of exercises and discussions designed to strengthen their ability to lead from wherever they are in their organization. Participants will also build a personal plan of action based on the core concepts of Great by Choice.  Wednesday evening, participants are invited to build connections informally during an ICMA-hosted conversation hour.

Thursday morning will begin with a conversation about "Leading Local Government in Challenging Times" and in particular will explore the role of local government professionals.  Bob O’Neill, ICMA executive director, will present this session in all regions except the Mountain Plains where Ron Carlee, ICMA chief operating officer will present this segment.

The YPLI session will end with a conversation led by ICMA-RC specialist Kathryn Kurre, "Are Your Finances Great by Choice?" Kurre will help participants better understand what it takes to make the decisions that will allow their future to be one of choice.
