A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to build on my professional development by purchasing a webinar that would provide me with new strategies and steps to better manage specific aspects of my job. I was excited, couldn't wait until 1:30 p.m., and canceled all scheduled meetings so there would be no distractions. Do you think I attended the webinar at 1:30? No. Those afternoon emails added up, project deadlines crept in, and I sadly missed the event I was excited to learn from.

Though I was disappointed that I couldn't make the "live" event, I could still watch the webcast recording for one full year. And while I didn't have the ability to take part in real-time Q&A’s, my registration still gave me access to speaker presentations. Having the ability to work around my own schedule and watch the recorded webcast at any time I wanted was worth the money. Plus, I can share the recorded webinar with my coworkers - that's a double win!

So, where am I going with this? Aside from wanting to let you know that the 2018 ICMA Virtual Conference offers all of these same benefits, leadership and professional development matter. And fitting it into your busy schedule is worth it. Even if you can't make a once-a-year, live opportunity like the 2018 ICMA Annual Conference, you should still consider learning virtually. On top of having the the ability to watch sessions anytime, anywhere; tapping into local government thought leaders; connecting with local government professionals; and earning credits toward your ICMA-CM or AICP-CM without the cost of travel; by attending the ICMA Virtual Annual Conference or any other online event, you also have the opportunity to:

1. Stay on top of your career.

Professional development in local government distinguishes you from the rest of the crowd, putting you at the top by having acquired the highest level of professional knowledge available.

2. You become a trusted resource.

Evidence of advanced knowledge in the local government profession gives a competitive edge in the field. Being someone who is well trained in local government shows the importance you place on self-improvement and knowledge.

3. It can provide a fresh perspective.

Local government is continuously changing, and local government professionals must be prepared to meet the needs of their community. Getting a fresh perspective on best practices in local government, even from your own desk, can allow any professional to be open to new opportunities, strategies, and ideas.
