In response to member requests for more regional training opportunities, ICMA University will be offering a skill-building workshop on facilitation skills in the Northeast and Mountains Plains regions, preceding the regional summits.

The number one skill identified by the ICMA Task Force on Leadership is facilitation. In response to member demand, and to address the Task Force on Leadership's findings, on April 2 in Princeton, New Jersey, and May 30 in Grapevine, Texas, ICMA University will offer a two-hour skill-building workshop, Facilitation: A Skill to Run a Meeting or the Platform for Leadership, taught by Felicia Logan,  ICMA director of leadership development.

For anyone charged to lead groups, teams, and complex discussions where people have varying views and interests, good facilitation can make the difference between success and failure. At the core of these roles is a series of skills that is best described as facilitative leadership.

A few of the basics to improve meeting facilitation:

  • Involve the group/team; ensure everyone has the opportunity for input
  • Determine and establish expectations
  • Be flexible but stay on track
  • Keep the process moving.
