Independence Power & Light (IPL) received the American Public Power Association Energy Innovator Award which recognizes creative, energy-efficient techniques to provide better service to electric customers. IPL was recognized for its Home Energy Loan Program.

“It has always been my philosophy that ‘we use what we need but we need what we use,’” said Leon Daggett, director of Independence Power & Light.  “The Home Energy Loan Program helps our citizens save money and conserve our precious resources.”

IPL developed its Home Energy Loan Program in partnership with City Credit Union to help home owners’ access funds to make energy efficiency improvements to their homes. Independence has a large population of retirees and blue collar workers who are home owners but may not have the resources to make energy efficiency improvements. The improvements funded by the program will result in substantial savings for residents over time.

The American Public Power Association represents not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities that power homes, businesses and streets in nearly 2,000 towns and cities, serving 48 million Americans.  These public power utilities generate or buy electricity from diverse sources. With no divided loyalties, these utilities are focused on a single mission — providing reliable electricity at a reasonable price, while protecting the environment.
