In September 2013, the ICMA Executive Board appointed a Task Force on Job Hunting Resources to review ICMA’s Job Hunting Handbook and expand its focus to include recent graduates and young professionals, as well as experienced managers. The members-only handbook was updated and expanded in 2014 and includes a new section on social media, along with sections on such topics as:

  • Planning your job hunt
  • Finding job vacancies
  • Creating your resume and cover letter
  • Preparing for interviews
  • Negotiating compensation.
Six Tips for Preparing for Interviews

Key to getting a job offer is having a successful interview. This excerpt from the handbook provides some helpful tips:

  1. Review available information regarding the local government.
  2. Make personal contacts with individuals who may have valuable information about the position and community.
  3. Assess your personal abilities, skills, and professional accomplishments.
  4. Assess your image and appearance.
  5. Prepare answers to potential interview questions.
  6. Plan your schedule so that you will be rested and engaged at the interview.
