
In September 2013, the ICMA Executive Board appointed a Task Force on Job Hunting Resources to review ICMA’s Job Hunting Handbook and expand its focus to include recent graduates and young professionals, as well as experienced managers. The members-only handbook was updated and expanded in 2014 and includes a new section on social media, along with sections on such topics as:
- Planning your job hunt
- Finding job vacancies
- Creating your resume and cover letter
- Preparing for interviews
- Negotiating compensation.

- Review available information regarding the local government.
- Make personal contacts with individuals who may have valuable information about the position and community.
- Assess your personal abilities, skills, and professional accomplishments.
- Assess your image and appearance.
- Prepare answers to potential interview questions.
- Plan your schedule so that you will be rested and engaged at the interview.
