ICMA’s Strategic Partner, The Ferguson Group, will fund a scholarship for an ICMA member to attend the Harvard Senior Executive program. The Ferguson Group had committed to funding this scholarship for the last three years and has extended its funding for an additional year (2014). The scholarship, to be awarded by ICMA, will cover the $11,950 tuition fee.

The Harvard Senior Executive program is a unique opportunity to challenge conventional thinking, thought processes, and the values that drive leadership decisions. It’s an opportunity for senior-level city and county managers and assistants to experience personal and professional renewal. Participants step away from the daily routine for three weeks, engage their intellect and hearts with other executives in team efforts to resolve tough issues, and renew the commitment to their life’s work.

To apply for the 2014 scholarship, fill out both ICMA’s application and the Harvard Senior Executive application and return them both to flittky@icma.org  by Monday, February 10, 2014. Applications received after this date will not be considered for the scholarship. The scholarship recipient will need to cover his or her travel expenses.

Participants choose the session which they would like to attend. Program dates for 2014 are:

  • June 2 - June 20
  • July 7 - July 25

A committee of ICMA members who have completed the program will select the recipient for the scholarship. Announcement of this year’s scholarship recipient will be made in April, 2014.

Scholarship criteria can be found on the ICMA website. For more information on the scholarship, contact Felicia Littky at 202-962-3656 or flittky@icma.org.

Not sure about the value of attending the Harvard Senior Executives Program? Consider this feedback from participants

It is critical for city/county managers to get away from the office to renew their creative thought processes. The freshest and most challenging three weeks in my career. The best investment of time and dollars in my career.

Stribling P. Boynton, city manager, High Point, NC

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Harvard University Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government early in my career. The program exposed me to professionals in the field and a level of instruction that helped to energize my critical thinking skills and led to tremendous benefits for my community.

Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager, City of Dubuque, IA
