Ethics 95 years

Formal review of the ICMA Code of Ethics, launched in 2013, continues with a current focus on Tenets 1 and 2. The ICMA Committee on Professional Conduct solicited member feedback on Tenets 1 and 2 and the Tenet 2 guideline on advice to officials of other local governments in May 2018.

Thanks to the more than 600 members who participated in the survey and provided more than 1,000 written comments. The committee also received a wealth of feedback from members collected at regional conferences and state association meetings.

The committee took this feedback to develop proposed revisions to Tenets 1 and 2 and the Tenet 2 guideline for your consideration. All members were sent an email inviting comments on the proposed recommendations through a short survey. The survey will be open until January 28 and all members are encouraged to respond. The committee is interested in your feedback on the new proposed language to help further refine its recommendations to the ICMA Executive Board.

Members with questions about the survey or the efforts to revise the ICMA Code of Ethics can contact Martha Perego, director of member services and ethics, at mperego@icma.org or Jessica Cowles, ethics advisor, at jcowles@icma.org.
