India Study Tour

November 10-21, 2006

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the 2006 India Study Tour is two-fold.  The first component is to introduce ICMA members to local government issues in the developing world comparable to the issues they face in the United States.  The second component of the study tour is for ICMA members to engage with Indian local government officials developing necessary skills required to work within an international context.

Program Goals

  1. Participants will learn about the Indian forms of local government and services provided by Indian municipal associations.

  1. Participants will be able to identify similarities and differences between their local government and the local governments of India.

  1. Participants, through arranged site visits, will witness the myriad issues local governments in India are currently faced with both positive and negative.

  1. Participants will have an opportunity to present information revealing how they have addressed the identified local government issues from India in the United States.

  1. Participants will have an opportunity to present information on the U.S. form of local government, as well as information on/about ICMA.

  1. Participants will have an opportunity to expand upon their experience and skills in U.S. local government by engaging in an international local government context, but in an introductory, controlled environment.   Such an opportunity allows each participant and ICMA to determine if international development work is a good fit for them.
