Local governments with municipal utilities are uniquely positioned to perform permitting, inspection and interconnection (PII) reviews in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Since the entire process is managed by the same municipal government, there exists an excellent opportunity to coordinate the permitting, inspection and interconnection process. This case study focuses on the City of Santa Clara, CA’s streamlined approach to addressing PII costs, where installers can get over-the-counter permitting and interconnection review for residential solar installations under 10kW.
