Public Administration George R. Schrader Professor of Practice in Local Government

The nationally recognized University of North Texas Department of Public Administration, located in the College of Public Affairs and Health Sciences (PAHS), invites applications for a George R. Schrader Professor of Practice in Local Government to support high-impact, practice-oriented teaching and student engagement. This non-tenure-track faculty position is designed for an accomplished public service professional who brings substantial real-world experience into the classroom and bridges theory with contemporary practice in government, nonprofit, and public-sector organizations. This position is a 9-month, professional faculty appointment that will be reviewed and may be renewed annually by the university during the initial term, which is 1 year.

The George R. Schrader Professor of Practice will teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses, mentor students pursuing careers in public and nonprofit service, contribute to innovative, practice-focused curriculum and work collaboratively with faculty on research-enhancing activities that reflect the evolving needs of communities across North Texas and beyond. The standard teaching load is 4/4, with adjustments based on service responsibilities. This role emphasizes hands-on learning, professional preparation, and meaningful engagement in the field of public administration. Service and administrative responsibilities may include student recruitment, alumni relations, program management, accreditation activities, and community and agency partnership development at the department, program, college, university, and professional levels.

Minimum Qualifications
• Earned master’s degree in public administration, public policy, political science, or a closely related field
• Senior leadership or executive-level experience in local, regional, or state government, nonprofit organizations, or public agencies
• Demonstrated ability or strong potential to deliver high-quality, practice-oriented instruction at the graduate and/or undergraduate level

Preferred Qualifications
• Prior experience in teaching or developing experiential learning opportunities, internships, applied projects, or practitioner-focused coursework
• Active professional engagement with public service organizations or associations
• Ability to contribute to research-enhancing activities, program growth, accreditation activities, and community and agency partnerships

Located within PAHS, the Department of Public Administration offers a nationally ranked NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration program and the Ph.D. program in Public Administration and Management. The department, which has a long tradition of local community engagement, also offers undergraduate degrees in Nonprofit Leadership Studies and Urban Policy and Planning, as well as an undergraduate minor in Public Administration. With 12 faculty and two staff members, the department is an active unit that values student service, externally funded research, and engaging community stakeholders to support the public good. The department is home to the Center for Public Management (CPM), established in 1992 as the professional development arm of the College of Health and Public Service, to build capacity in the public and nonprofit sectors through training, research, and community engagement.

The College of Public Affairs and Health Sciences at the University of North Texas prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, exercise physiology and urban design.
