The Village of Newton Falls, a historic and vibrant community located in southwestern Trumbull County, Ohio, is seeking an experienced and skilled professional to serve as its next Law Director. Conveniently located between Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, and Pittsburgh, the Village encompasses 2.39 square miles and is home to just under 5,000 residents.
Position: Law Director (Part Time)
The Law Director serves as the chief legal officer for the Village of Newton Falls. This is a highly responsible and professional position providing legal advice and representation to the City Manager, Mayor, Council, and Village departments. The Law Director ensures that the operations, policies, and initiatives of the Village comply with applicable laws and regulations, and represents the Village in legal proceedings as required.
The Law Director reports directly to the City Manager and Council. Extensive independent judgment, discretion, and professional integrity are required in this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice to the Mayor, Council, City Manager, and Village departments.
- Draft, review, and approve ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
- Represent the Village in civil litigation and administrative proceedings.
- Advise on labor and employment matters, zoning and land use, public records, and ethics compliance.
- Attend Council meetings and other public meetings as requested.
- Coordinate with outside counsel when specialized expertise is needed.
Ideal Candidate Profile

Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and in good standing with the Ohio Supreme Court.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible legal experience, preferably in municipal or public sector law.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as a Law Director, Assistant Law Director, or City Solicitor.
- Expertise in labor and employment law, zoning and land use, contracts, or public finance.
- Experience working with elected officials and public boards.
