Communications Specialist
City of Merriam, KS
This position is responsible for supporting the City of Merriam’s mission by promoting a positive public image of the City, while promoting the City’s values and fostering a culture of collaboration and strategic initiatives. As the City’s communications expert, this position will utilize a variety of media to share community news, events, services, surveys, and more, keeping residents informed. The role blends proactive storytelling, responsive public communications, and meaningful community engagement to build trust, transparency, and connection with Merriam residents, businesses, and visitors.
Essential Functions: Proactively writes and creates engaging, relevant, accurate, and timely content with a voice that carries the Merriam brand and values across all communication platforms. These include social media, website, e-newsletter, magazines, videos, news releases, postcards, letters, advertising, and other promotional programs and materials. Supports City departments’ internal and external communication needs, developing public relations and marketing strategies to meet City Council and administrative goals. Assists with speeches, presentations, and strategic messaging. Craft compelling, targeted messaging for residents, businesses, or visitors. Attends meetings to stay informed. Serves as a public-facing ambassador of the City at public events, meetings, and forums, and takes photos and videos for City news and publications, monitors and enforces the City’s brand standards, ensuring proper use across the City, and promotes City values at all times. Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree from a college or university in communications, journalism, or a related field.
• 2-4 years in the field of journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related area.
• 2-4 years of municipal experience or similar preferred.
• Any combination of equivalent education or experience is acceptable.
