Principal Civil Engineer and Principal Transportation Planner

The County of Marin seeks experienced and progressive leaders to apply for the positions of Principal Civil Engineer and Principal Transportation Planner. The Principal Civil Engineer position oversees a major division within the Public Works Department with management responsibilities over the Public Works Traffic and Transportation Division, including traffic engineering, active transportation planning, grant applications, and project programming. The Division is comprised of 8 accomplished planners, engineers, and support staff that evaluate the County’s transportation existing infrastructure, plan for future growth and user needs, and recommend enhancements for future implementation. The Principal Transportation Planner oversees the Division’s active transportation planning efforts, including the development of plans to improve the accessibility and safety of walking, biking, and other non-motorized transportation. Their team works to create a safer, more connected community by using data to analyze community transportation needs, soliciting public input, developing, and prioritizing recommendations for improvements, and securing funding for future projects.
Principal Civil Engineer: requires 5 years of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience. At least 2 years of the required professional experience must have included functioning in a supervisory capacity. Registration as a California licensed Professional Civil Engineer is required. California Traffic Engineer licensure is not required but is highly desirable.
Principal Transportation Planner: requires equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and 4 years of increasingly responsible professional transportation planning experience which has included professional transportation policy analysis, project planning, and/or transportation engineering experience. Graduate level coursework may substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of 2 years. A Master's degree is highly desirable.
Annual salary range for the Principal Civil Engineer is $156,124.80 to $189,800.00, DOQ. This position is also eligible for a $10,000 signing bonus and an additional 2% differential above base salary as a California-licensed Professional Civil Engineer. The Principal Transportation Planner annual salary range is $129,792.00 to $157,809.60, DOQ. The County of Marin offers a full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, pension/retirement, deferred compensation, and flexible spending accounts. Retirement is offered through Marin County Employees’ Retirement Association (MCERA).
