Risk Manager
City of High Point, NC
Under the general direction of the Finance Director, performs advanced professional work in developing and administering the City’s risk management program which includes insurance, worker's compensation, and safety.
Essential Tasks
- Identifies areas of risk exposure and recommends appropriate treatment by elimination, assumption, or transfer.
- Directs safety program.
- Administers worker's compensation program.
- Monitors and directs the claims process with TPA's and insurance carriers including Worker's Compensation, Liability and Property damage claims.
- Maintains records of claims and experience relating to risk management activities, monitors claims administration activities, and assists in claim settlements.
- Will serve as the City’s ADA coordinator, working closely with departments and facilities management staff.
- Coordinates inter-departmental projects to reduce or eliminate risks related to security, workplace safety, safety training, property conservation, environmental protection, and emergency preparedness.
- Supervises, motivates, trains, and effectively develops subordinate staff.
- Evaluates and make recommendations for funding levels pertaining to self-insured retention, to maintain fiscal integrity of these funds. Draft statements of administrative policies and procedures relating to risk reduction and funding.
- Collaborates with Human Resources Department and City Attorney’s Office as necessary.
- Participates in special projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in risk management, public administration, business administration, or a closely related field
- Four (4+) years of demonstrated successful and progressively responsible experience in the development and administration of risk management programs.
- Thorough knowledge of insurance and insurance procurement.
- Considerable knowledge of the philosophy, principles, and practice of risk management.
- Considerable knowledge of OSHA and ADA regulations.
- Soft skills critical to role takes ownership, ability to multitask and prioritize, flexible, adaptable, collaborative, and willing to take on new challenges.
- Must possess strong communication skills (verbal and written); should be comfortable working with any level of employee or manager.
- Proficient in Microsoft office suite (MS Word and Outlook are used daily).
Preferred Skills
- Risk management experience in the public sector.
- General knowledge of the scope and functions of municipal government, including municipal finance, budget, and personnel administration.
- A high degree of initiative, with the ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated experience meeting and exceeding goals in a fast-paced work environment.
- Strong focus on customer service with a commitment to continuous improvement.
