This article describes citizen governance projects in Ypsilanti, Michigan and lessons learned from efforts to involve in citizens in local government decision-making. Two different approaches have been used to involve citizens in the budgeting process; each involving collaboration with the city government, Eastern Michigan University, and community members. The processes described by the article utilized education as the foundation of meaningful involvement.
