The city of Aurora, Colorado, Weed and Seed Program was nominated to the 2005 ICMA Annual Awards Program. The Police and Code Enforcement of Aurora collaborated in an effort to reduce crime and physically improve the Northwest portion of Aurora. The comprehensive program includes education of citizens through police walk and talk, community meetings, neighborhood watch in Spanish, community emergency response team, coffee with cops and code, partnerships with business, mediation services, anti-graffiti, and training for rental property owners and managers. Successes of the program include a 3% reduction in violent crime, 10% reduction in motor vehicle thefts, a 32% reduction in drug-related arrests, and a reduction of 46% in gun-related incidents.
