Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and comment functions on news articles allows us to instantaneously connect with friends and broadcast our opinions. However, as local government professionals, how do we ensure that our personal thoughts are not confused with the official positions of the organizations we represent, especially if they diverge? This article provides two real-world examples on how professionals reacted to the use of social media by employees and some advice offered by ICMA's ethics committee, the Committee on Professional Conduct (CPC) pertaining to anonymously blogging.
