This article discusses the use of photovoltaic (PV) cells that use solar power, a sustainable energy source, for commercial, residential, and industrial activity in urban areas. It discusses PV technology in general and in relation to other types of energy sources, includes recommendations for installation of PV facilities, and provides examples of PV policies in two major metropolitan areas. In addition, the article lists arguments that promote PV use as well as those that inhibit its deployment. Finally, it recommends actions communities can take to accelerate PV deployment.
