Membership on a municipal advisory board in Qala-e-Naw, Afghanistan, provided a forum for the director of the local kindergarten to spur a change in municipal priorities. Waste from a nearby slaughterhouse was contaminating water around the school, causing illnesses. After she raised the issue with the mayor, the slaughterhouse was moved. The advisory board was supported by the USAID-funded Regional Afghan Municipalities Program for Urban Populations, West (RAMP UP-West). ICMA was a member of the RAMP UP-West team.
