The Standards of Excellence developed by the Standards for Excellence Institute of the Maryland Association for Nonprofit Orgnanizations, defines nonprofit organizational health based on a variety of indicators. These include, mission and program definition and clarity, effectiveness of the governing body, creation and implementation of conflict of interest policies, effective use of employees and volunteers, sound financial and legal management, accessibility of public information, responsible and truthful fundraising policies and the extent to which the organization represents the population it serves through public education and public policy advocacy.
