This article describes the dilemma many communities face in meeting the increasing demand for bandwidth and fiber-optic connectivity. Large commercial buildings suffer from the "last-mile" phenomenon, which refers to the trouble with connecting buildings with the providers of fiber-optic capabilities without greatly disturbing sidewalks and paved streets. Several of the solutions that are discussed include piggybacking on existing gas distribution lines, the use of existing sewer infrastructures, and wireless local-loop installations.
