Sant Antonio was ranked one of the most obese cities in the country for several years leading up to 2011. To combat the costs to employee quality of life and health care, the city's leadership enacted the Employee Wellness Program. The goal of the program would be to first encourage city employees and their families to embrace healthy eating and exercise habits.
The program included financial incentives for participation in certain activities, health expos, marathons and marathon training programs, and coverage for annual physicals. As a result, about 1/5 of the employees have participated in the programs.
